Imagine waking up tomorrow and discovering that every border on every map has disappeared.

France is still there.

Germany is still there.

The Alps have not moved. The rivers have not changed. The Mediterranean is still exactly where it was yesterday.

But the lines are gone.

For a moment, the map looks strangely peaceful.

Then ask a harder question:

What would the world look like if we started with the Earth itself, instead of with the countries drawn on top of it?

That is where our story begins.

The Map in Your Head

Most of us carry a map in our heads.

We know that Europe is somewhere north of Africa. We know the Atlantic separates Europe from America. We know Russia is enormous, Japan is an island, and India points south into the Indian Ocean.

But there is something strange about the maps we normally see.

They are full of countries.

Countries have names, colours and borders. They look permanent.

They are not.

The political map of the world is a snapshot of one moment in human history. Many borders we treat as normal are younger than our grandparents. Others have moved repeatedly. Some will move again.

Mountains work on a different clock.

So do oceans, deserts, river valleys and coastlines.

Those features change too, but usually so slowly that a human lifetime barely notices.

Political power moves much faster.

Empires appear and disappear. Countries split apart. Alliances change. Borders move.

The Earth is the stage.

The countries are part of the story being performed on it.

Before There Were Countries

Try describing Europe without using the name of a single country.

Start in the west with the Atlantic.

Move east and you find wide plains that stretch for enormous distances.

To the south sits the Mediterranean, broken up by peninsulas, islands and narrow passages.

Across the continent, mountain ranges interrupt movement. Rivers cut through the landscape. Some valleys open easy routes. Others end in walls of rock.

None of this was designed by a government.

No king decided where the Alps should be.

No parliament voted to create the Mediterranean.

No army drew the coastline.

Yet these features have influenced where people could live, where they could travel, where they could grow food, where they could trade and where armies could move.

That does not mean a mountain decides what humans will do.

It means something subtler.

A mountain changes the cost of doing things.

The Cheapest Road Is Rarely a Straight Line

Imagine you need to move a thousand people from one valley to another.

If the land between them is flat, you mainly have a problem of distance.

Put a mountain range between them and suddenly you have a problem of distance and terrain.

You may need a pass.

You may need a road.

You may need bridges, animals, vehicles, engineers and supplies.

Every obstacle adds cost.

And this idea applies to much more than travelling.

An army needs to move soldiers and food.

A government needs to move information and officials.

A merchant needs to move goods.

A city needs food, water and energy.

A country that wants to trade with distant places needs routes to ports.

Geography rarely says, “You cannot do this.”

More often it says:

You can do it. But it will cost you.

Where the Map Gets Narrow

Some places become important for the opposite reason.

They are not difficult to cross.

They are difficult to avoid.

Imagine a narrow channel connecting two much larger seas. If thousands of ships depend on that passage, a tiny piece of geography can suddenly matter to people thousands of kilometres away.

Later we will meet places such as the Strait of Hormuz, the Suez Canal and the Strait of Malacca.

For now, remember the principle:

This is one reason maps are so useful.

They let us see relationships that are almost invisible when we look at countries one at a time.

Geography Is Not Destiny

At this point it would be easy to make a mistake.

If geography matters so much, perhaps countries are simply prisoners of their environment.

They are not.

Human beings are unusually good at changing what geography means.

We tunnel through mountains.

We build bridges over rivers.

We cut canals through land.

We create ports, railways, highways, aircraft and satellites.

A place that is badly positioned for one technology can become extremely valuable after another technology appears.

A remote coast can become a major container port.

A desert can become valuable because it contains oil, minerals or huge amounts of sunlight.

A mountain can stop an army and later carry a railway through a tunnel.

Technology changes the rules.

But it does not erase the playing field.

One Thread to Follow

We are going to spend the rest of this work looking at cities, borders, empires, trade routes, wars, technologies and modern powers.

It will often seem that the story is about people.

It is.

But those people are always making decisions somewhere.

And where they are changes the choices available to them.

That is the thread we will follow.

Not:

Geography explains everything.

But:

Geography is one of the things we forget to look at.

Once you start looking, familiar stories begin to look different.

Why did some cities become enormous?

Why did empires expand in particular directions?

Why did European powers fight for centuries over particular seas?

Why did the United States become so powerful?

Why does Russia care so much about space between itself and potential enemies?

Why does China care about its coastline and Taiwan?

Why, in an age of satellites and artificial intelligence, do ports and undersea cables still matter?

These are not separate questions.

They are pieces of the same puzzle.
